Essential Information

Meals during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

You will get a variety of food options, which are freshly prepared in the local villages. Dal, Bhat, and Tarkari (lentils, rice, and veggies) are the most common foods you will find during your ABC trek. You will get plenty of menu items in the lower region, like in Chhomrong. As you reach higher altitudes, the food options will get limited but still be nourishing.

For breakfast, you will find options such as Tibetan bread/chapati, eggs, coffee/tea, cornflakes, toast with jam, butter, and cheese, and pancakes.

The options for lunch/dinner include Dal, Bhat, and Tarkari (lentils, rice, and veggies) with pickle, momo (dumplings), pasta, chowmein, fried rice, soup (mushroom soup, chicken soup, vegetable soup), potato items, and thukpa. You can have freshly made apple pie and rice pudding for dessert.

For drinks, you have the options of tea, coffee, water, fruit juice, hot lemon with ginger/honey, hot chocolate, beer, whisky, and others.

It is best for you to get properly hydrated while staying at a high altitude. Drink plenty of purified water, hot lemon with ginger and honey, and tea. We do not recommend that you consume alcohol or hot chocolate at higher altitudes, as they might raise the risk of altitude sickness.

Accommodations for the ABC Trekking

In Kathmandu, your stay will be at a 3-star hotel (Hotel Vistara) with complimentary dinner and breakfast. Your 2-night stay in Pokhara will be in a cozy hotel. The accommodations during the Annapurna Base Camp trek will be in local teahouses or lodges, usually with twin-sharing bedrooms. The teahouses are basic yet comfortable.

During your overnight stay in villages such as Ulleri and Ghorepani, you will have private rooms with attached bathrooms. At higher elevations, you will need to use shared restrooms. The bedrooms would not be heated. Nonetheless, you could use the dining area in the evening to have adequate warmth and rest. There is an extra charge to take the hot showers, use Wi-Fi, or charge your electronics. The amenities will be fewer as we go upwards to the Machhapuchre and Annapurna Base Camps.

Best time to do the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The most appropriate times to trek are spring (March-May) and autumn (late September-November), as they offer stable and warm weather with clear skies. You will get great visibility of the mountain peaks, such as Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri, in these seasons. Nonetheless, the monsoon and winter seasons present with quieter trails but are prone to slippery and snow-covered trails.

The spring season, which is from March to May, is a pleasant time for the ABC trek. The path around this time is decorated by lush green forests with rhododendron blossoms. With pleasant and stable weather, trekkers can enjoy clear and picturesque Himalayan vistas. The temperature in the lower areas like Ghorepani is between 15°C and 20°C in the daytime, while it reaches -5°C at night in the base camp. This is a peak season, and thus the accommodations and trails during this time are well-maintained.

Another ideal season is the autumn season, which spans from late September to November. The autumn actually starts in September, but it might still rain in the earlier days of the month, so the best time will be the last days. The weather is clear and dry with high visibility of the peaks of the Annapurna mountain ranges and many others. There won't be much weather uncertainty during this season. The temperature ranges from 12°C to 18°C in the lower villages with cool and crisp air. The temperature reaches -10°C or even lower at night in the base camp. This is a lovely season to witness the clear mountain views after the monsoon season.

Trekkers can also trek to the Annapurna base camp during winter or monsoon, but they need to travel with precaution. The trail is less crowded during these seasons. In the monsoon, there will be slippery and muddy trails and chances of landslides. Whereas the winter season brings snow-covered trails and incredibly cold weather, making the trek to ABC very tedious. Therefore, these seasons are not suitable for trekking in the Annapurna Sanctuary.

Difficulty of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The ABC trek is moderately challenging with steep ascents and altitude gains. The highest point of the trek is the Annapurna Base Camp, which is 4,130 meters in height. Trekkers on most days have to cover 5-7 hours to reach the base camp. To enjoy the trek fully, trekkers must properly adjust to the high altitude and remain hydrated as well as walk slowly and steadily to prevent altitude sickness.

The Annapurna Base Camp trek is suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers. Beginners with good physical fitness and mental resilience can successfully complete this trek.

It is good to have training before the trek to improve endurance. Exercises like swimming, running, hiking, and cycling can help build up stamina. Doing exercises like squats and lunges can help strengthen the core and legs. It is highly advisable for beginners to carry less (only things that are necessary) in their backpack to avoid exhaustion.
