Essential Information
Accommodations during the Poon Hill Trek
Your stay during the Poon Hill Trek will be in teahouses and lodges with simple yet comfortable rooms. The rooms will have twin beds with blankets and pillows. The bathrooms will be shared in most places. Your overnight stay in Pokhara will be in a comfortable hotel with an attached bathroom, internet access, hot showers, and device charging facilities.
The teahouses will have a dining area where you can gather in the evening and sit nearby the burning stove to get warmth. There are no heating facilities in your room, so bringing a sleeping bag will be a wise choice for extra warmth during cold nights. The toilets in the lodges will mostly be in squat style. Western-style toilets can be found in lower-altitude regions.
Hot showers, WiFi, and device charging are available in most teahouses but come with an additional cost. We recommend that you use data packages for internet access and bring a power bank for device charging to save money from additional expenses.
Meals along the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek
Meals available for the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek will be fresh, hygienic, and energy-rich. You will be served three-course meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) daily for the trek. Many food items will have garlic, as they help in acclimatization.
The menu for breakfast usually consists of chapati/Tibetan bread, eggs, tea, coffee, noodles, toast with jam/honey/butter, and pancakes.
For lunch and dinner you can have daal bhat (rice and lentils with veggies), fried rice, momo, chowmein, thukpa, pudding, pasta, garlic soup, apple pie, and so on.
It is highly recommended to stay hydrated during your trek so drink plenty of water, green tea, hot lemon with ginger, and garlic soup. Avoid alcohol and beverages with caffeine due to health concerns. Consuming meat is likely not a wise choice, as it might not be fresh and hygienic, considering that it needs to be transported to higher-altitude regions.
Most Appropriate time for the 6 days Ghorepani Poon Hill trek
The most appropriate times for the 6 days Ghorepani Poon Hill trek are during the spring and autumn seasons. The spring season (March to May) is characterized by clear skies, pleasant temperatures, rhododendron blooms and great mountain views. This is the perfect season for getting the best photographs of the beauty of the Annapurna region.
Similarly, autumn (late September to November) is one of the best and busiest times for the Poon Hill trek. The season presents travelers with clear blue skies, stable weather, and excellent visibility of the Himalayas after the monsoon rain. Generally, the monsoon lasts till the month of August in Nepal but there are still chances of rainfall in early and mid-September. So, late September is mostly considered the ideal time for trekking.
Winters are cold, which makes trekking difficult. Whereas, the trail gets muddy and slippery, and there is a high chance of landslides during the monsoon season. That is why these seasons are not considered the suitable time for the Poon Hill trek. Nonetheless, one can still trek around this time if they want a peaceful and less crowded trail.
Poon Hill Trek Difficulty
The difficulty of the Poon Hill trek can be considered easy to moderate level. Most of the trek follows a gentle and steady uphill climb. There are some steep sections but are manageable for the majority of trekkers. The trails are well marked and well maintained for the trek.
This trek is suitable for all age categories, from children older than 5 to people in their 60s. The trek can be completed in 4 to 6 days with scenic Himalayan views at different stops. People with a decent level of fitness can easily complete this trek.
The trek does not reach above the elevation of 3500 m at any point, so there is less chance of altitude sickness. Still, we will walk at a steady pace and stay well hydrated to avoid altitude sickness. Even first-time trekkers can successfully complete this trek with proper preparation and pre-training activities.
Permits Required for the trek
For your Ghorepani Poon Hill trek, you will require two main permits:
i) Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): This permit is essential for trekking within the Annapurna Conservation area. It will cost around NPR 3000 for most international travelers (NPR 1000 for citizens of SAARC members).
ii) Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS): This is required for managing and tracking the trekkers in Nepal.
All the necessary permits are issued and collected by Rising Adventure on your behalf. Thus, you can have a hassle-free and smooth trek in the Annapurna region.
