After arrival at the Tenzing-Hillary airport, we will then embark on a 3-hour trek towards Phakding along the Dudh Koshi River.

The next stop will be the town of Namche Bazaar. On the way, we will pass a number of suspension bridges painted with prayer flags. We shall take the route along the banks of the river Dudh Koshi and through the rhododendron forests. We will soon reach the Monjo Village. A short stroll beyond that will lead to the entrance of the Sagarmatha National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Then we will continue our adventure and finally arrive at Namche Bazaar, filled with trekkers and friendly local sherpas.
Rest Day at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization
In our Gokyo Trek itinerary, we have planned a rest day today as a form of acclimatization to the high altitude. It is just a good day to go around the bustling town, Namche Bazaar. We will have an opportunity to live the life and culture of the local Sherpas.
We can also explore the major attractions, such as Khumjung Monastery and Hillary School or even climb up to Everest View Hotel. The hotel also offers breathtaking scenes of the mountain ranges, such as Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse.
Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole
The trek to Dole will be full of highs and lows. We will be making our way to Mong La Pass, with views of Mt. Ama Dablam and Mt. Thamserku, among others. From the pass, we will descend and then climb uphill to reach Thenga Phortse village.
Afterwards, we will head out from Phortse to Dole through the pine forests, delighting us with the beauty of wildlife and nature. As we get closer to Dole, we will get mesmerizing mountain views. We might even get a beautiful sunset view if we arrive there in time. We will stay the night in Dole.
Trek from Dole to Machhermo
We will begin our journey from Dole with a descent and then climb up along the trails on a ridge. En route, we will get stunning views of Mount Cho Oyu, Mount Kantega, and Mount Thamserku.
Our trek will go through Luza village and then over the Dudh Koshi river to finally reach the charming settlement of Machhermo.
Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo
Today on our Gokyo Trek, we will finally reach our destination, the Gokyo Lakes. We will ascend towards Phanga, enjoying scenic views of Mount Kangtega, Thamserku, and Cho-Oyu. Essential Information
Food during the Gokyo Lake Trekking in Nepal
Food on the Gokyo Lake Trek will be freshly prepared and sufficient to boost your energy levels during the high-altitude trek. Trekkers can expect a selection of Nepalese, Tibetan, and common continental dishes along the way. You will have plenty of options in the menu (both veg and non-veg) at lower elevations. The menu becomes limited at higher elevations due to transportation challenges.
The standard breakfast options include toast (with jam, butter, and honey), chapati or Tibetan bread, oatmeal, corn flakes, omelets, porridge, hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot lemon, etc.), and so on.
The standard lunch options include daal (lentils), bhat (rice), tarkari (veggies), momo (Tibetan dumplings), noodles, thukpa, sandwiches, stew, fried rice, spaghetti, pasta, mashed potatoes, different types of soups, pizza, and so on.
The dessert options usually include apple pie, porridge, cookies, chocolates, pastries, yak cheese, and so on.
Accommodations in the Gokyo Lake Trekking
Accommodation during the trek is available in teahouses/lodges. The teahouses offer simple but comfortable rooms with twin beds. Lower areas like Namche Bazaar have slightly better facilities, including attached bathrooms, while higher villages usually offer simpler rooms with shared toilets. The toilets are available in a Western or squat style.
Dining areas in the lodges are heated, but the bedrooms are still cold. We recommend that you have a sleeping bag to get extra warmth during cold nights. Hot showers are available in the lower region but you need to pay an additional fee for hot showers in the higher region. Teahouses only accept payments in cash, so we advise you to carry enough cash (Nepali Rupees) for your entire trek in the Everest region.
Best time to do the Gokyo Ri Trek
The Gokyo Ri Trek in Nepal is done throughout the year. However, due to appropriate conditions, the autumn and spring seasons are considered the most appropriate time for Gokyo Lakes trekking. It is still possible to trek during other seasons.
Here’s a breakdown of the general conditions for trekking during each season.
Spring Season (March-May)
The spring season is one of the most popular seasons, as it presents warm temperatures and stable weather. You can get clear views of the mountain peaks and the pristine Gokyo Lakes during this season. The route will follow through lush forests filled with blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers. The trail is a bit crowded during this season. With stunning mountain views and favorable weather conditions, it is the ideal season for trekkers who want to enjoy nature at its fullest.
Autumn Season (Late September-November)
Although the autumn season typically starts in early November, sudden heavy rain showers might still occur in Nepal due to the unpredictable weather. That is why late September to November is usually ideal for the full autumn trekking experience.
The weather is clear after the monsoon rain, and the temperature is really mild during this season. The temperature is between 15 and 22°C during the daytime in lower altitudes, while the nights are cold in higher regions.
This is also the season of festivities, as we celebrate our main festivals, Dashain and Tihar, during this season. The route is the most crowded during this season. There is a low chance of landslides, and the trail is very favorable. Thus, making this season ideal for trekkers wanting the stunning natural views as well as to experience the festivals and culture of the Nepali people.
Winter Season (December-February)
This season offers a quiet trail and the snow-capped landscapes. The views of the Himalayan vistas still remain mesmerizing. The temperature is very cold during the daytime and reaches below 0°C at night. The teahouses will offer extra blankets for extra warmth at nighttime.
Monsoon Season (June to August)
The trail during this season is muddy and slippery. The view can be obstructed due to rain and clouds. It is not considered an ideal season for trekking, as landslides may occur around this time. However, one can trek during this season if they prefer adventure and want a less crowded trail. Trekkers also might encounter beautiful waterfalls along the way.
Difficulty of the Gokyo Lakes Trek
The difficulty level of the trek to Gokyo Ri is moderately challenging. However, it is not necessary to have prior trekking experience for the Gokyo Lake Trek. Someone who is physically fit and does not have health issues related to the heart or lungs can complete this trek. Beginners who are physically fit can prepare themselves by doing activities like running, swimming, and hiking to prepare themselves for the trek.
One must be ready to climb steep ascending trails, properly acclimatize to the high altitude, and keep a steady pace to complete the Gokyo Lakes Trek. Although the trek challenges you physically and mentally, the scenery of the Himalayas, the glaciers, and the Gokyo Lakes all make it worth it.
