Winter Ice climbing can also be taken as an adventure sport. It is done during the winter season, around December to February. This season is favorable for ice climbing, as the weather as well as the ice around the waterfalls are in the finest conditions. Some of the popular ice climbing destinations are in the Annapurna and Langtang regions.

Our overnight stay will be at Besisahar, where we will take rest and prepare ourselves for our ice climbing training program.

Day 4

Drive from Besisahar to Humde

Today, we embark on a scenic drive towards Humde via Chame, which is the administrative center of the Manang district. We will encounter village settlements, terraced farms, and incredible scenic river landscapes along the way. Our ice climbing course will be held at the village of Humde, which is surrounded by towering Annapurna ranges.

Day 5

Theory session of ice climbing

On this day of the training program, we will first have our theory class on topics related to ice climbing. We will learn definitions about different gears and equipment and how they are used during ice climbing. We will also gain knowledge about the formation of ice and the history of ice climbing in our theory class. For the rest of the day, we can explore around the village or go on a short hike for acclimatization.

Day 6

Start of Ice Climbing training session

Our winter ice training session officially begins today as we first fully gear up for the ice climb. We will also attach crampons to our boots, which will support walking on ice. First, we will learn flat footing on low-angle ice. Next, we will learn how to use the duck walk technique (spreading our feet in a V-shape) as we make our ascent on steeper terrain. Following that, we will practice diagonal ascent and diagonal descent. Finally, we will learn how to use an ice tool and ice axe to end today’s session.

Day 7

Top Rope and Mock Lead Climbing

Today, we will first learn top-rope climbing after having our breakfast at the hotel. In this climb the rope is anchored at the top of the climbing route. We will have this training session until we have our packed lunch. After that, we will learn the mock lead climbing, which is the step before the lead climbing. In this climb, the trainee will be acting as a lead climber, but there will be a top rope attached as backup for safety. After completing the training session, we will return to our hotel, where we will have a Q&A session and have our night's rest.

Day 8

Lead Climbing and Anchoring

We will be learning and practicing lead climbing and anchoring for today. In this session, we will be taught how to clip the ropes into quickdraws as we make our ascent and safely set anchors on the ice walls and glaciers.

Day 9

Multipitch climbing

This day we will advance our skills in multi-pitch climbing, which will be done in multiple stages. This will involve a climb to a route that is more than one single rope length. This training will require the lead climber to follow each pitch, belay from the anchor, and move upward to several pitches before completing the whole ascent. This training will require intense focus and precision to complete it safely.

Day 10

Multi-Pitch Anchoring and Rappel (Belayer)

On this day of the winter ice climbing course session, we will learn about how to properly build anchor systems during multi-pitch climbs. The training will also involve inspecting and managing those anchor systems. The next session today will be about rappelling (belaying), which involves descending safely using the climbing rope while maintaining speed and controlling our position.

The 11th day of our Humde ice-climbing course will primarily focus on revising the knowledge and skills of ice climbing.

Day 12
