Island Peak Climbing
Island Peak, also known as Imja Tse, is a popular trekking and climbing peak in the Khumbu region in northeastern Nepal and is situated near the Everest Base Camp. The peak can also be conquered by less experienced climbers. Reaching the summit of Island Peak will offer the breathtaking views of soaring peaks such as Makalu, Lhotse, Brauntse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam.
Island Peak got its name due to its appearance like an island in the sea of ice when it was viewed from Dingboche by the members of the British Mount Everest expedition in 1953. Later, it was named Imja Tse, but Island Peak is still a popular name for the peak. The climb to Island Peak involves travelling through glaciers, scrambling over rocks, and basic use of crampons and ropes.

Island Peak Climbing Detailed Itinerary
Flight to Lukla and trek to Phakding
We will be taking an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, arriving at the iconic Tenzing-Hillary Airport. The 30-minute flight offers scenic mountain views, establishing it as one of the most beautiful flights in the world. Then, our guide will introduce our porter for the expedition, and we will begin our trek to Phakding. For proper acclimatization, we will be spending our night at Phakding.
Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
We will be continuing our expedition with a 6-hour trek along the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, which got its name due to its milky-white glacial water (milk is referred to as “dudh” in Nepali). Along the way, we pass through spectacular views of pine, fir, and juniper forests. We will be crossing five different suspension bridges, including Hillary Bridge, from where we proceed to Namche Bazaar after an uphill walk.
Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar
This day will be a rest day to acclimatize ourselves to the high altitude. Today will be all about sightseeing at Namche Bazaar and experiencing the culture of the Sherpas. The Namche Bazaar, which is known as the Gateway to Mount Everest, has numerous tourist attractions. We may pay a visit to the Sherpa museum, where we can be educated about the customs and traditions of the Sherpa. We can also take a hike up to Everest View Hotel (the highest hotel in the world), where we can get to see the magnificent views of the Himalayas, including the formidable Mount Everest.
Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
The next point of our journey to Island Peak Climbing is Tengboche, which takes about 5-6 hours of trekking. Our trail will lead us to a small settlement known as Phunki Thenga after passing through thick alpine forests. After ascending along the trail, we arrive at Tengboche. At Tengboche, we can visit the historic Tengboche Monastery, which is the largest and most significant monastery in the Khumbu region. There are beautifully detailed wall hangings, a massive 20-foot statue of Buddha, and the traditional instruments and robes used by the Lamas inside the monastery. Our overnight stop will be in Tengboche.
Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche
The route will descend to Debuche and will again ascend to Pangboche while going through suspension bridges on the Imja Khola. We continue our trek along the steep trail before reaching Dingboche. We will be welcomed by stunning views of Island Peak, Ama Dablam, and Mt. Lhotse at Dingboche.
Trek from Dingboche to Chhukung
Today, we will be heading to Chhukhung Valley along the Imja Khola Valley with glacial moraines and rocky terrain. The magnificent views of Ama Dablam and Lhotse are also seen en route to Chhukhung. At Chhukhung, we will relish the raw beauty of the high Himalayas. On the same day, we will meet our climbing guide, who will brief us about the procedures of climbing Island Peak.
Acclimatization Day at Chhukung
For the high altitude adjustment, we have allocated a rest day today. Our guide will further instruct us about climbing techniques and how to use the equipment properly, helping to get fully prepared for the Island Peak climb.
Note: We can also hike to Chhukung Ri (peak over the Chhukung Village) today, where we can enjoy yourself with a wonderful view of Ama Dablam and Amphu Labsa. We will then head back to Chhukung for the night.
Trek from Chhukung to Island Peak Base Camp
Today, we are going to walk north from Chukkung for 4 hours and then head eastward to the main valley along a steep ascending path. The trail will go along the Imja and Lhotse Glacier moraines and then to the Island Peak Base Camp. We will then set up our tent and spend the night at the base camp.
Climb to Island Peak Summit and back to Chhukung
We will wake up very early and begin our climb, enabling us to avoid the afternoon’s strong winds around the mountaintops, which can be a massive hurdle for the successful climb to the summit. The climb will go through a rocky ridge and then to the base of the glacier. We will move up the glacier and follow along the south ridge to make it to the summit.
We did it! We’ve reached the summit of Island Peak. Stand tall, enjoy the view, and take pictures of the grandeur of Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, and Island Peak, among others. After relishing our moment at the peak for a while, we will head back to our base camp and to Chhukung following the previous route.
An additional day allocated to attempt the summit
We have reserved an extra day to reach the Island Peak Summit, considering the unpredictable weather. We will have an extra chance to reach the summit because we want to be succeeded the expedition. Considering that the summit is already successful, we will remain at Chhukung today and enjoy the spectacular view of the mountains for another day.
Trek from Chhukung to Pangboche
We will descend to Dingboche and towards Pangboche following the same route. We will rest tonight at Pangboche.
Trek from Pangboche to Namche Bazaar
Today, we will retrace our steps and reach Tengboche along the Imja River. The route goes through forests, which are inhabited by various wildlife like pheasants, musk deer, mountain goats, snow leopards, and others. In Tengboche, we can revisit the Tengboche monastery and travel through the fragrant juniper and rhododendron forests, and cross the bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. While going back, we will enjoy the majestic views of Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse and finally reach Namche Bazaar. We will rest at our lodge at Namche Bazaar tonight.
Head back to Lukla from Namche Bazaar
