The mountain views seen along the trail, including Manaslu (the 8th highest mountain in the world), Ganesh Himal, and Himchuli, are genuinely awe-inspiring. We will also cross the Larkya La Pass, which is one of the highest passes in Nepal, standing at an elevation of 5,106 m.

Our Manaslu Tsum Valley trek itinerary begins from Kathmandu with a scenic drive heading towards Machha Khola. We will traverse through the Budhi Gandhaki River and Soti Khola as well as encounter terraced farms, deep gorges, and suspension bridges on our road trip.

The trekking journey officially gets underway from Machha Khola, moving towards Jagat. Trekkers then will pass through the quaint villages of Lokpa, Chumling, and Chhokangparo. We will also go on a short excursion to the sacred Milarepa Piren Phu Cave (Pigeon Cave) and then arrive at Nile. Next, we head towards the ancient Mu Gompa, lying at the heart of the Tsum Valley.

After completing our Tsum Valley trek, we move from Nile to Deng (via Chumling) to start our Manaslu Circuit Trek. The second half of our trek will proceed towards the villages of Namrung, Shyala, and Sama Gaon. These villages provide extraordinary views of the towering Mount Manaslu (8,163 m). There will be an acclimatization day at Sama Gaon, providing trekkers the perfect opportunity to go on a hike to Manaslu Base Camp or the iconic Pungyen Gompa.

We will then head towards Dharmasala and finally reach the highest point of the trek, Larkya La Pass. From the pass, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, such as Cheo Himal, Annapurna II, and the soaring Mount Manaslu. Essential Information

Meals on the Manalsu Tsum Valley Trek

Our Manalsu Tsum Valley Trek package includes 3-course meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) per day throughout the trek. You will get a drink (tea, lemon tea, hot lemon with ginger, etc.) for every meal. We have not included alcoholic beverages in our package.

The food along the trek will be served in the teahouses except for some days, during which we will have packed lunch. The food will be hygienic and nutritious along the trail. The food menu items will have Nepali and Tibetan dishes with some Western meals. The menu options get limited as you trek to higher altitude regions.

Breakfast options: tea, coffee, hot chocolate,  juice, eggs, Tibetan bread, pancakes, porridge, omelets, oatmeal, muesli breads, corn flakes, toast with cheese/butter/jam, boiled potato, etc.

Lunch/Dinner options: Dal Bhat Tarkari (lentils, rice, and veggies), garlic soup, vegetable soup, momo, noodles, Thukpa, spring rolls, fried rice, curry, pasta, rice pudding, papad, prawn, ramen, etc.

You need to stay hydrated throughout the trek to minimize the risk of altitude sickness. Drinking hot lemon, green tea, and garlic soup can be very beneficial. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages when you are traveling in the higher regions, such as Larkya La Pass. We also strongly recommend that you avoid meat due to hygiene concerns throughout the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trek.

Accommodations during the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley Trek

The accommodations along the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trail will be in basic teahouses/lodges. They are run by the local families and have rooms with basic bedding. While the facilities are basic, they are comfortable and are well-maintained. The bathrooms in most teahouses are shared. The accommodations in the Tsum Valley section can be rustic but the Manaslu circuit region will have better amenities.

The dining areas in most teahouses are heated and trekkers can gather here to get some warmth during the evenings nearby the stove. During your stay in the regions of the Manaslu Circuit, WiFi can be available in the teahouses with additional fees. However, in the Tsum Valley there might not be WiFi facilities in the teahouses. Hot showers and device charging facilities will also come with extra charges along the trail.

Best time for Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trekking

The most appropriate times for the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trekking are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) seasons.

The spring season in Nepal spans from March to May, which is characterized by mild temperatures, rhododendron and wildflower blooms, and clear visibility of the Himalayan peaks. The daytime temperature in the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley ranges from 10 to 20°C and can reach up to -4°C at nighttime in the higher regions. This season is ideal for trekkers who are nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.

The autumn season is the busiest season for the Manaslu Tsum Valley trek. The sky is clear and the air is crisp after the monsoon rain, which usually ends by August or mid-September. The daytime temperature in lower regions can reach up to 25°C and in higher regions like Bhimtang, it can reach up to 15°C. Similarly, the temperature reaches up to -6°C at night in higher elevations. The trails are well maintained and the visibility of mountain views is absolutely maintained making it one of the most ideal trekking seasons.

Trekking is possible during the winter and monsoon seasons as well, though it comes with its unique set of challenges. In winter, the weather becomes very cold at night in the higher elevations. The trails can also be blocked by snow and ice around this time. Similarly, the trails are muddy and slippery and there is a high chance of landslides and floods during the monsoon season.

Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek difficulty

The Manaslu Tsum Valley trek is considered a strenuous trek. It involves trekking in higher-altitude regions (above 5000 m), remote and isolated trails, and a lengthy itinerary. As the trek goes to higher elevations like Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), there is a great chance of getting altitude sickness without proper acclimatization. The teahouses on the trail are simple and have limited facilities.

The Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trekking is one of the longest treks in Nepal, which lasts approximately 18 to 21 days. The trek includes approximately 5-7 hours of walking per day, which makes good physical fitness and great mental resilience a necessity for the trekkers.

Altitude Sickness and its mitigation during the Trek

The risk of altitude sickness in the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trek is common due to trekking in the high-altitude region, such as Sama Gaon (3,530 m), Dharmasala (4,460 m), and the long Larkya La Pass (5,160 m). The Manaslu Tsum Valley trek itinerary at Rising Adventure involves gradual ascent and enough rest days in stops such as Samagaon and Nile to prevent acute mountain sickness. If you get any symptoms of AMS like headache, dizziness, and shortness of breath, inform your trekking guide as soon as possible. Ignoring your symptoms can be catastrophic. Our guides are well-trained to provide first aid and are always committed to ensuring your safety. Should an emergency arise, we also arrange helicopter evacuation services, which will be covered by your insurance policy.
