The Upper Dolpo Trek takes us to the upper part of the Dolpo region, lying in the northwest of Nepal, within the Dolpa District of the Karnali Province. The region falls between the Tibetan Plateau and the Dhaulagiri ranges. This trek involves a journey to the remote and less-traveled upper part of the Dolpo and offers trekkers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and lifestyles of Bon Buddhism followers.
Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek
The trek is classified as a strenuous one, as it comprises a long trekking time frame (almost 3 to 5 weeks) and trails passing through remote, high, and steep paths. One needs to have a solid level of physical fitness and strong mental resilience to complete this trek.
The Remote Dolpo Trekking Adventure will pass several high passes on our way, such as the Kang La Pass, with an elevation of 5,306 m. These passes offer stunning views of the Himalayan peaks as well as the desert-like arid landscapes in the high-altitude regions.
The Upper Dolpo Circuit trek route also passes through several fascinating villages and monasteries like Shey Gompa, providing us with knowledge about the culture of Tibetan Buddhism and the Bon religion. In the villages of Namduna Gaon and Saldang, trekkers can witness the customs of barley cultivation, seasonal trade, and herding of yaks.
We will complete our full circle to Jhupal through several attractive villages like Khani Gaon and Tarakot, marking the end of our unique, once-in-a-lifetime adventure in the Dolpo region.

Best time to do the Upper Dolpo Trek
The most appropriate times for the Upper Dolpo Trek are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) seasons. The spring season is characterized by favorable weather and lush green landscapes. The skies mostly remain clear, providing impressive views of the Himalayan peaks.
Similarly, another perfect time for the trek is during the autumn season, which starts in September and ends in December. However, rain is expected from early to mid-September in many regions of Nepal, including Kathmandu. During autumn, the weather is stable, and the temperature is moderate. The finest views of the mountain peaks can be seen around this time.
It is also possible to do the Upper Dolpo Circuit trek during the monsoon season, as the Dolpo region lies in the rain shadow area. This means the winds that bring the rain are blocked by the mountains. Nonetheless, delays in flight can occur due to heavy rainfall in Kathmandu. The trek is not possible during the winter season due to snowfall and cold.
Permits needed for the Dolpo Trek, Nepal
You will need to have the following permits for the Dolpo Trek in Nepal:
- Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Upper Dolpo
- Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Lower Dolpo
- Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit
All the permits will be registered and acquired by Rising Adventure on your behalf so that you can have hassle-free trekking in the Dolpo region.
Upper Dolpo Trek Difficulty
The 24-day Upper Dolpo trek itinerary involves traversing through remote and isolated trails, a lengthy trek duration, and passing through high passes. Thus, making it a strenuous trek. The high passes of Kang La, Sela La, and Jeng La reach more than 5000 m; as a result, there will be the risk of getting altitude sickness. Walking at a steady pace, staying hydrated, and having proper acclimatization with enough rest days becomes essential to avoid altitude sickness.
Navigation also becomes difficult due to remote paths and rugged environmental conditions. There is also concern about unpredictable weather. Proper planning will help to overcome these obstacles. Guides at Rising Adventure will always be there to assist trekkers to get out of unforeseeable circumstances.
That being said, the Upper Dolpo trek can be very rewarding, as it presents trekkers with magnificent views of the Himalayas and diverse landscapes. Exploring monasteries and several villages in the Dolpo region will provide an incredible Dolpo culture immersion experience.
