The Upper Mustang trek is one of the best treks in Nepal, which takes travelers to the hidden kingdom of Mustang, Lo Manthang. In general, Mustang is divided into two regions, i.e., Lower Mustang and Upper Mustang. The lower Mustang is a famous tourist destination and is usually busy. Meanwhile, the Upper Mustang is a restricted area and was not open to outsiders till 1992. At present, trekkers are required to obtain special permits to visit this area.
Upper Mustang Trek Nepal
Upper Mustang is often referred to as the desert in the mountains, as it lies in the rain shadow area and has a landscape similar to a desert in the High Himalayas. Also known as mini Tibet, the architecture and lifestyles of the locals in Upper Mustang are heavily influenced by Tibetan culture. Upper Mustang offers trekkers the opportunity to explore ancient monasteries, palaces, caves, and rock paintings. The Upper Mustang trek trail also provides magnificent views of Himalayan peaks like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and many others.
Our Upper Mustang trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by a scenic flight to Jomsom. Then the trekking journey begins as we head towards Kagbeni, Chele, and Syangboche villages. We will then follow the trail to an ancient walled city, known as Lo Manthang. This is where we can visit amazing places such as Namgyal Gompa and the Chhoser cave complex (Shija Jhong Cave).
On the way back, we travel to Tsarang and Chhuksang. The last part of the journey will be to the holy place of Muktinath, which is sacred to both the Hindu and Buddhist cultures. At last, we go back to Jomsom, where we will board our flight back to Pokhara and then drive to Kathmandu.
The Upper Mustang Trek is an extraordinary journey in the remote area of Upper Mustang, featuring the epic Himalayan vistas and iconic landscapes. Moreover, the trek provides a special chance to learn about the culture, art, and ways of life of the local communities, which are profoundly influenced by Tibetan culture.
This trek is rated as moderately difficult, so it is appropriate for trekkers who are reasonably fit. The Upper Mustang trek is also among the best trekking destinations in Nepal during the monsoon season, with stable weather conditions and clear trails due to its location in a rain shadow region.

Best time for Upper Mustang Trekking
The most ideal times for the trek to Upper Mustang are the spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) seasons. These seasons offer pleasant weather, clear sky, and great mountain visibility. It is also possible to trek in the Upper Mustang region during the monsoon season (June to August), as the region lies in the rain shadow region. So, there is no rainfall during the monsoon season.
Tiji Festival
The Tiji Festival is a Buddhist festival that is celebrated in Lo Manthang, lasting for 3 days. This festival usually falls in the month of May. The first day of the festival is known as Tsa Chham, where monks who wear traditional brocade robes and masks perform sophisticated dances.
The second day of the festival is Nga Chham, where there are more dancers representing Dorje Shunu's pursuit and eventual victory over his demon father. Today’s dance is more aggressive and dynamic, which engages tourists with the true spirit of Tiji.
The festival ends on the third day with Rha Chham, which translates to "defeat of evil." The monks destroy the black effigy, which represents ill spirits and bad luck. The effigy is destroyed outside the city walls, which is believed to protect Mustang for the year ahead.
